The tolerance and annotation modifications between 2D and 3D drawings must be taken into account early in the design process, so that manufacturing information is consistent and up-to-date. In order to do this, synchronicity between designers is essential in order to save time and be able to reuse 3D tolerance analysis.

Based upon 3D definition, CATIA Tolerancing guarantees consistency between 3D design and 2D tolerances and annotations. Users can create a 3D product from a 2D schematic and apply tolerance and annotation information to a 3D product, which ensures consistency. The 2D layout can be directly created in 3D to define the product and to capture key manufacturing knowledge. Afterwards, users can generate the assembly drawing and the product definition is directly re-usable for manufacturing planners and can propagate downstream systems.

Furthermore, CATIA Tolerancing enables specifications of tolerance and annotations to support international standards, such as the STEP standard.
